21 kidnapped victims freed as Nigerian army intensifies anti-bandit operations

The Nigerian Army says it has rescued 21 kidnapped victims, including four Chinese nationals, during a coordinated military operation targeting armed bandits in Kwara and Kogi States, north-central Nigeria.

The operation, carried out on October 17 by troops of the 2 Division and Sector 3 of Operation FANSAN YAMA, involved coordinated strikes by the 12 Brigade Lokoja and 22 Armoured Brigade Ilorin.

The victims, comprising 14 men, five women, one infant, and the four Chinese nationals, were reportedly abducted from different locations across the two states.

Military officials said the victims were freed after sustained offensives forced the kidnappers to abandon their captives. Some of the rescued individuals had been held for over four months.

Major General C.R. Nnebeife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division and Commander of Sector 3 Operation FANSAN YAMA, confirmed the rescue and said the freed hostages were immediately provided with first aid, relief materials, and medical attention.

“The Division remains committed to sustaining the ongoing onslaught against all criminal elements. There will be no hiding place for bandits and other criminals within our area of responsibility,” Major General Nnebeife said.

According to the Army, many of the rescued victims were weak and unable to walk unaided due to prolonged captivity but are now responding to treatment at a military medical facility. They are expected to be reunited with their families once fully recovered.

The Nigerian Air Force provided aerial support during the rescue mission, while other security agencies contributed through joint intelligence and ground coordination.

Major General Nnebeife commended the troops for their courage and urged them to maintain operational momentum in restoring peace and stability across Kwara, Kogi, and neighbouring states within the Division’s jurisdiction.

The rescue marks another success in the Nigerian military’s ongoing campaign to dismantle criminal networks responsible for widespread abductions and violence across parts of the country’s north and central regions.
