2025 World AIDS Day: Oyo calls for renewed commitment to end HIV, News Live Nigeria.
The Oyo State Government has called for renewed commitment and collective action in the fight against HIV/AIDS as the 2025 World AIDS Day approaches.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OYSACA), Dr. Gbola Adetunji, made the call on Tuesday in Ibadan while speaking on activities lined up for this year’s commemoration.
Dr. Adetunji noted that the 2025 theme, “Overcoming Disruption: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” emphasizes unity, accountability, and stronger collaboration in ending the epidemic. He stressed the need for prevention, awareness and sustained support for people living with HIV (PLHIV).
He reaffirmed OYSACA’s commitment to intensifying the fight against HIV/AIDS. While acknowledging the significant progress made in reducing HIV prevalence in the State, he also expressed concern over the rising rate of new infections, especially among young people.
Dr. Adetunji highlighted the State government’s consistent investment in HIV services under the leadership of Governor ’Seyi Makinde, including improved treatment access and expanded awareness on prevention and transmission.
“Over the years, we’ve made significant strides in increasing access to HIV testing, treatment, and care,” he said.
“Our state has recorded a notable decrease in new infections, thanks to the tireless efforts of our healthcare workers, community leaders, and individuals living with HIV. We’ve strengthened prevention programs with focused education, condom distribution, and mother-to-child transmission prevention initiatives.”
He also expressed appreciation to the State Government for allocating and enrolling 10,000 Health Insurance Scheme slots under the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) for people living with HIV.
In his remarks, the Coordinating Director of OYSACA, Dr. Wale Falana, announced that the Agency will embark on a State-wide awareness walk, HIV counseling and free testing services, school and market outreach, media engagements, and community dialogues as part of the 2025 World AIDS Day activities.
Dr. Falana urged residents to take advantage of free testing and counseling services, seek accurate information, and utilize available healthcare opportunities. He noted that ignorance and stigma remain major hindrances to ending HIV/AIDS.
He reminded the public of the Oyo State Anti-Discrimination and Stigma Law (2016), which criminalizes discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS, with provisions for fines and possible jail terms for offenders.
