“As I bow out: I’m leaving SISS better than I met it” — Dr Ogungboyega (Jim Salaam)

As the tenure of the outgoing Principal of Sped International Secondary School (SISS), Dr S. A. Ogungboyega (Jim Salaam), draws to a close, she reflects on a remarkable era of transformation, development and unprecedented growth—affirming with confidence that the school is being left far better than she met it.

Her stewardship, defined by innovation, resilience and an unwavering commitment to excellence, delivered achievements that continue to reshape SISS in lasting ways.

In the area of infrastructure and physical development, the school recorded tangible progress. A modern skill acquisition centre was built, the girls’ hostel was fully fenced, and an eight-room toilet facility was constructed, while a borehole—supported with a dedicated generator through the assistance of Engineer Idrees Adeoye—was completed for the boys’ hostel.

The school environment also improved through the installation of innovative boards, tiles boards and the procurement of 40 wooden chairs and lockers. ICT facilities received major upgrades, including new equipment, repair and formatting of several systems, and installation of essential educational software.

Transportation and logistics equally received strategic attention. Two new engines were purchased for the white coaster and hummer bus, while the principal’s official car was fitted with a new gear. A Public Address System was acquired alongside slashers for maintaining a clean and green environment. A new bus stop was also erected for students—personally funded by the principal—in addition to the purchase of coolers, serving items and other materials used for school events.

Academically, SISS experienced outstanding progress. The school secured approval as a NABTEB centre and recorded unprecedented performances in the 2024 and 2025 WAEC examinations as well as in the 2025 BECE results. Student enrolment rose significantly, hostel feeding improved with the introduction of pounded yam, and skills acquisition was formally integrated into the school timetable, aligning SISS with modern educational standards.

Staff welfare remained a major priority under her administration. Salaries were consistently paid on the 25th of every month, along with leave bonuses and a general upward salary review, representing significant percentage increases across all cadres.

Annual free medical check-ups were provided, and staff received transport palliatives after subsidy removal, morning coffee during harmattan, and food palliatives—all personally sponsored by the principal. Promotion exercises were conducted promptly, while long-owed gratuity payments were cleared, ensuring that retirees received what was due to them without delay. Students also benefited immensely from her leadership.

The school excelled in various competitions—winning first place in 20 events and second place in eight others. The widely celebrated “One Day Principal” initiative gained traction on social media, boosting the school’s visibility. The Thursday Assembly Talk, which features a weekly ₦1,000 prize for the best speaker, was introduced and funded by the principal. Twenty-two fruit trees were planted to enhance the school’s greenery. Teachers’ Day was celebrated in grand style with pounded yam and efo, while several academic challenges—including the 2024 WAEC English outcome—were addressed and resolved positively.

As she bows out, the outgoing principal leaves behind a legacy of progress, accountability and visionary leadership. Her tenure strengthened the structure and reputation of SISS and inspired a culture of excellence and unity that will continue to shape its future. Parents and stakeholders also poured out heartfelt tributes acknowledging her impact.

Alhaji Taofeek Adeniyi Afolabi remarked, “Without any bias, we appreciate our dear Provost and the Management Members, the SPED Management Board, the Principal of the school, Dr Ogungboyega (who goes extra miles in all ramifications for the success of our wards), the staff and parents.”

Dr and Professor (Mrs) S. O. Olanrewaju also expressed their gratitude, stating, “I want to specially appreciate the Principal, School Management and all the past and present teachers that contributed positively to the excellent WAEC results. I do not in any way regret bringing my son all the way from Abuja to SISS. May Almighty God continue to bless and uplift the school.”

In a tribute titled “Salutation to an Icon With a Difference,” Mr. Oyegbami Stephen described her leadership as exceptional. “One lesson I have learnt about you is that you are a focused leader, a goal-getter and a goal pursuer. When distractions arose, you stayed focused and committed to your goals. Dear Principal, like a mother, I stand today to celebrate you for all your accomplishments. You came, you saw and you conquered.”

With achievements spanning academics, welfare, infrastructure and innovation, the outgoing principal, Dr S. A. Ogungboyega (Jim Salaam), confidently affirms, “I am leaving SISS better than I met it.”
