MON: Buhari honours Imaam Abdullahi Abubakar who saved about 300 Christians in Plateau in 2018

President Buhari has presented the Honour of Member Order of the Niger (MON) to Imaam Abdullahi Abubakar (Imaam who saved 300 Christians in Plateau State) as he honoured distinguished Nigerians with National Honours in Abuja on 11th Oct 2022.

Abdullahi Abubakar, the 87-year-old Imam who saved about 300 people during an attack in Plateau State, was honoured alongside DG WTO Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, UN Deputy Sec. Gen. Amina Mohammed, Ooni of Ife HRM Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, Olu of Warri HRM Ogiame Atuwatse III, State Chief of Protocol Amb. Lawal Kazaure, Special Adviser Media & Publicity Mr Femi Adesina, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Ishaq Oloyede; the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State amongst others.

Since his historic act of rescuing hundreds of Christians from being killed in the Jos crisis on June 23, 2018, he’s risen to fame across the country and beyond.

The Islamic cleric’s name now is synonymous with peace and affection – a virtue that earned him the United States Religious Freedom Award.

Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, along with four religious leaders from Sudan, Iraq, Brazil and Cyprus, were awarded the 2019 the International Religious Freedom Award, which is given to advocates of religious freedom.

“The imam gave refuge to his Christian neighbours, sheltering 262 Christians in his mosque and his home…. pleading with them to spare the lives of the Christians inside, even offering to exchange his own life for theirs,” CNN reports.
