There have been wild talks in the Nigerian political space about the legality of the chairmanship of the Yobe State Governor and Chairman Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee of the APC, Sir. Mala Buni.
The Supreme court in its unanimous ruling yesterday on the Ondo State Governorship election declared the chairmanship of Sir. Mala Buni illegal based on constitutional shreds of evidence.
This left a wild fear on the members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, especially as the state and local congresses are fast approaching.
A top source from within the party stated that since the Supreme Court has declared Buni’s chairmanship illegal, he feared that party members would challenge the legality of the caretaker committee.
Reports gathered from confirmed sources noted that apart from the disagreement over planned consensus arrangement, the Supreme Court judgment had compounded the party’s woes.
One of the stakeholders of the APC who spoke to Punch News on the condition of anonymity expressed that said although the party is about to commence its planned congresses, members were worried and divided about the implications of the judgment.
The party chieftain explained that the judgment had “called to question the legality of the caretaker committee.
“We are dealing with a combustible issue. All the seven Supreme Court Justices agreed on the constitutional point that a sitting governor cannot hold the dual elective position of governor and party national chairman, the Party Chieftain Stated.
“Now, it was not only the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, that escaped being removed by the whiskers due to no fault of his, it was also our party.
The Party Chieftain noted that a single file of application against the chairmanship of the APC would have mocked the victory of Akeredolu at the court.
