FG rejects genocide allegations, affirms Nigeria’s commitment to unity, counter-terrorism

The Federal Government of Nigeria has firmly rejected allegations of religious or ethnic genocide within the country, describing such claims as false, misleading, and damaging to the nation’s image.

In a statement released in Abuja, government officials emphasized that Nigeria remains a multi-religious and multi-ethnic state where diversity is both recognized and protected under the Constitution. The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of all citizens irrespective of faith, tribe, or political affiliation.

The statement stressed that ongoing security challenges, particularly in the North East and other parts of the country, are the result of terrorism, banditry, and criminality, not state-sponsored persecution or targeted genocide. It further highlighted that the fight against Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other violent groups has been a collective national effort, supported by regional and international partners.

According to the government, mischaracterizing Nigeria’s security struggle as genocide undermines the sacrifices of security agencies and communities who have suffered greatly in the battle against terror. Officials noted that both Muslims and Christians, alongside various ethnic groups, have been victims of extremist violence.

The Federal Government urged the international community, media outlets, and advocacy groups to rely on verified facts and to avoid narratives that may inflame division or fuel mistrust. It reiterated that peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and national reconciliation remain central to Nigeria’s long-term stability.

In closing, the government reassured citizens and global partners that Nigeria is committed to building a united, peaceful, and secure nation while addressing insecurity through both military operations and non-kinetic strategies, including education, poverty reduction, and community engagement.
