The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a crucial two-week extension of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
Originally slated to conclude on July 10, 2026, the registration window will now remain open until Friday, July 24, 2026, granting eligible Nigerian citizens an extended opportunity to formalize their status ahead of upcoming national elections.
According to an official statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), the policy adjustment follows a comprehensive review of operational workflows and extensive field reports.
The decision directly addresses formal feedback submitted by INEC’s State Offices, registered political parties, civil society organizations, and various public stakeholders who advocated for an extended window to maximize citizen participation.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities.”
In tandem with the timeline extension, the Commission has unveiled a major technological milestone aimed at streamlining the registration architecture.
Beginning Wednesday, July 8, 2026, INEC will launch a new online self-service registration option designed specifically for eligible, first-time voters. The service will be accessible globally via the dedicated CVR portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org, complete with an integrated step-by-step user guide.
This digital intervention allows eligible citizens to fully initiate and finalize their voter registration workflows—including critical biometric capture operations—directly from personal mobile devices, tablets, or computers. By establishing a remote access pipeline, the electoral umpire aims to dramatically mitigate physical congestion, remove geographic barriers, and eliminate the necessity of visiting local INEC offices for initial documentation.
Anticipating infrastructure demands and data security concerns, INEC emphasized that the new self-service portal is reinforced by a robust multi-layered security ecosystem. The digital architecture incorporates strict identity verification protocols, advanced live biometric validation, and comprehensive backend integrity checks. These structural safeguards are systematically engineered to eliminate fraudulent entries, circumvent dual registration attempts, and preserve the ultimate sanctity of the National Register of Voters.
With the registration framework now active since its commencement on August 18, 2025, the Commission strongly urges all eligible individuals who have yet to register to swiftly capitalize on this extended grace period. Citizens are encouraged to explore the newly introduced digital interface as a seamless alternative to traditional, on-site physical registration methods.
