The Oyo State Government has launched a renewed crackdown on traders, artisans, motor dealers, and other vendors obstructing pedestrian walkways and roadside corridors across the state.
The directive was issued by the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd), at his office in the Secretariat, Ibadan.
Adekoya noted that the occupation of walkways for business activities remains illegal and continues to contribute to traffic congestion, minor road incidents, and general inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians. He explained that reclaiming these spaces is crucial to restoring order and ensuring safer movement, especially as the festive season approaches.
He identified key hotspots where illegal trading has become rampant, including the University of Ibadan (U.I.) axis, Samonda, Mokola, and several other busy areas across the metropolis.
The OYRTMA boss directed all affected traders to immediately relocate to government-approved market spaces, stressing that the ongoing operation is aimed at easing traffic flow and safeguarding public safety.
Adekoya warned that any trader who fails to comply will face penalties, including fines and possible court prosecution.
The Oyo State Government applauded OYRTMA for its consistent efforts in promoting road safety and maintaining public order, reaffirming its commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure and ensuring the free movement of people and goods throughout the state.
