Public primary and secondary school teachers across Oyo State have been directed to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, following the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in the state.
The directive was issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, in compliance with a resolution of the union’s national leadership, which expressed deep concern over the prolonged detention of the victims and the uncertainty surrounding their rescue.
According to the union, the lingering abduction has created widespread fear among teachers, heightened anxiety among parents, and discouraged school attendance in many communities. The NUT noted that the safety and security of teachers and learners can no longer be taken for granted, necessitating urgent action to draw the attention of relevant authorities to the gravity of the situation.
The union stated that the indefinite industrial action is intended to compel government and security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the immediate and safe release of the abducted teachers and pupils.
Teachers across the state have been instructed to withdraw their services from all public primary and secondary schools until further notice. The union also urged its members to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and stay safe in their respective homes throughout the duration of the strike.
Reaffirming its solidarity with the victims and their families, the NUT pledged to continue engaging relevant government authorities through lawful channels until the abductees regain their freedom.
The union further assured members of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare, dignity, and security of teachers and learners, stressing that no meaningful teaching and learning can take place under an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
The directive was jointly signed by Hassan A. Fatai, Chairman, NUT Oyo State Wing, and Comrade Salami Olukayode, Secretary, NUT Oyo State Wing, on May 31, 2026.
