The Young Muslim Association (TYMa), Oyo–Ogbomoso Zone, has concluded a week-long programme held from the 17th to the 23rd of November 2025 to commemorate the World Day for the prevention of child abuse.
The event featured high-impact advocacy activities aimed at strengthening child safety, enhancing awareness and promoting community involvement in preventing abuse across Oyo town and its environs.
As part of the week’s activities, TYMa paid courtesy visits to the Area Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Unit Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
During the visits, TYMa leadership emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration between community-based organisations and security agencies in tackling child abuse, protecting vulnerable children and ensuring safer neighbourhoods.
A key component of the programme was the school advocacy session held at Crescent Heights Junior Section, Oyo. Pupils were sensitised on recognising unsafe situations, reporting suspicious behaviour and speaking up whenever they feel threatened. Teachers and administrators also participated, strengthening the shared responsibility of ensuring a safe learning environment.
TYMa expanded its reach beyond the local zone by hosting a nationwide webinar that connected 31 different zones and engaged an estimated 10,000 children across Nigeria. The session focused on child rights, personal safety, online protection and the role of parents and caregivers in preventing abuse. The digital engagement further demonstrated TYMa’s commitment to using technology for large-scale child protection education.
Another important highlight of the observance was the special Jumu’ah service held at the Oyo central mosque, Akesan market, Oyo, where the Chief Imam, Barrister Hussain Bilal Akeugberu talked on child dignity, parental responsibility and the Islamic obligation to protect minors from all forms of harm. Worshippers were urged to foster safe homes, monitor their children closely and report any suspicious behaviour that could expose them to abuse.
The commemoration climaxed with a community-wide sensitization walk from Owode to Akesan market. At the frontage of the historic Alaafin’s palace, the children were addressed by Alhaji Jamiu Olukokun, the Chief Inspector at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Oyo State.
He encouraged them to speak out boldly against abuse, stay aware of their surroundings and trust responsible adults for support. Parents and guardians were equally urged to remain observant, proactive and involved in their children’s lives.
Through these coordinated activities, TYMa Oyo–Ogbomoso Zone reaffirmed its commitment to promoting child protection, preventing abuse and building a safer community for every child. The 2025 observance not only amplified awareness but also strengthened partnerships essential for long-term child safety in Oyo State and beyond.
