Oyo assembly clarifies process behind N300bn loan approval

The Oyo State House of Assembly has denied claims that it secretly approved a ₦300 billion loan request from the Executive without proper notification to lawmakers.

The clarification follows allegations by Hon. Ibrahim Shittu, member representing Saki West State Constituency, who questioned the procedure of an emergency plenary session convened earlier this week.

In a joint statement signed by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, and the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Media, Public Affairs and ICT, Hon. Waheed Akintayo, the Assembly described Shittu’s allegation as misleading, stressing that the House followed due legislative process.

According to the statement, the emergency sitting was duly communicated and conducted in line with Assembly rules, adding that the loan request was debated before a resolution was passed.

“The House of Assembly is committed to transparency and accountability in its legislative duties. At no point was any decision taken without the knowledge and participation of members,” the statement read in part.

While dismissing the secrecy claims, the Assembly reaffirmed its support for initiatives aimed at financing development projects across the state, noting that the loan facility was considered necessary to drive infrastructural growth under the current administration.

The statement urged members of the public to disregard misinformation and assured that details of the loan process remain available for scrutiny in the official records of the House.
