Oyo screens 300 applicants, warns new JPs against interfering in criminal cases

The Oyo State Government has cautioned newly screened 300 applicants for the title of Justice of the Peace (JP) to remain impartial in their duties and avoid meddling in criminal matters that lie outside their jurisdiction.

The warning was issued by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ayodeji Abiodun Aikomo, Esq., during a two-day screening exercise for more than 300 applicants seeking to be conferred with the honorary JP title. The exercise was held at the Ministry of Justice Conference Room, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to the Commissioner, the initiative was designed to ensure that only credible and competent individuals are selected to serve as Justices of the Peace. He noted that the role of JPs is vital to promoting peace, resolving minor disputes, and guiding their communities with fairness and integrity.

“Uphold integrity, act without bias, maintain confidentiality, and serve with fairness. Do not take sides in disputes, do not exploit the position for personal gain, and do not interfere in criminal cases beyond your jurisdiction,” Hon. Aikomo cautioned while addressing newsmen after the exercise.

He stressed that the JP title is not a mere social honour but a responsibility that requires commitment, service, and credibility. “It is a call to service, not a badge of prestige. Those who qualify must be ready to strengthen grassroots justice through fairness, honesty, and community leadership,” he added.

Highlighting the functions of Justices of the Peace, the Commissioner explained that they are expected to mediate minor civil disputes, promote peace and order, and support legal processes by witnessing affidavits and other legal documents.

Earlier, in her welcome remarks, the Director of the Citizens Mediation Centre, Mrs. Adeola Ige Adeleke, urged the applicants to familiarize themselves with the Justice of Peace manuals in order to better understand their roles.

Similarly, the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mrs. Fatimo Yusuf, reminded them that the essence of the JP office is “making peace, building harmony, and supporting justice based on truth.”

The screening panel, which comprised senior officials of the Ministry of Justice and related agencies, assessed applicants on their integrity, community service records, and understanding of JP responsibilities.

The exercise, according to the Ministry, reflects the Oyo State Government’s commitment to deepening access to justice at the grassroots, ensuring fairness in conflict resolution, and strengthening peace-building across communities.

Successful applicants will be officially conferred with the honourary JP title after all necessary checks are completed.
