Scholars must guide political leaders towards national development — TMC

The Muslim Congress (TMC), Oyo State chapter, has called on Islamic scholars across Nigeria to provide continuous guidance and moral counsel to political officeholders to ensure policies and governance that advance citizens’ welfare and foster national development.

The call was made during the organisation’s 2025 Annual Lecture, held on Sunday, October 5, at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

Delivering the keynote address, the Aare Balogun Baamofin of Ibadaland, Honourable (Rtd.) Justice Moshood Abass, urged the Federal Government and religious leaders to work collaboratively in building a peaceful, united, and prosperous Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme, “The Nigerian State and Lessons from Contemporary History,” Justice Abass emphasized the need to confront pressing challenges such as insecurity, disunity, and economic hardship with sincerity and courage.

“Nigeria stands today at a turning point. We are blessed with brilliant minds, fertile land, and youthful energy, yet we face insecurity, corruption, and hardship. Only peace, sincerity, and courageous action can rescue this nation,” he said.

He commended TMC for providing a platform for meaningful dialogue on national transformation and urged speakers not merely to highlight problems but to offer practical solutions.

Also addressing the gathering, the Grand Imam of Ogbomosoland, Sheikh Dr Teliat Yunus Ayilara II, urged Muslims worldwide to deepen their faith and called on the Federal Government to consider aspects of Sharia law, which he said could promote justice and national stability.

Responding to recent security incidents in Kwara State, Sheikh Ayilara called for swift justice against those responsible for acts of banditry.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Waali (State Coordinator) of TMC, Alhaji Engr. Daud Oladosu, described the lecture theme as a call for sober reflection and collective responsibility toward building a better Nigeria.

“We must learn from the triumphs and trials of our past to navigate our present challenges wisely and build a more peaceful and prosperous nation,” he said.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Minister of Power, Honourable Adebayo Adelabu; Rtd. Justice Moshood Abass; Sheikh Dr Teliat Yunus Ayilara II; Alhaji Abdulhamid Solate, MD/CEO of Hajj Mabrur Ventures Ltd; and the Iyalaje Adinni of Oyo State, Alhaja (Amb.) Rahmat Romoke Ayinde.

The ceremony also featured Qur’an and Spelling Bee awards, as well as goodwill messages from guests.
