An Osun-based human rights group, Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative, THURIST has warned television anchors and presenters against hijab stereotype on their programmes, News Live Nigeria reports.
A release signed by the group’s Director General, Barrister Sulaymon A. Tadese said;
“The Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative is using this medium to express dissatisfaction over a TV program uploaded on YouTube, anchored by a lady (name not yet known) on the Ijagbo Hijab Crisis.
We are equally aware of a Television Program on TVC in which it was established that Muslims in Ijagbo were those behind the violence which erupted following protest staged by them.
This is totally false and far from the truth while we wish to inform all and sundry that the violence was unleashed by thugs suspected to be hired by the Baptist Missionary of Ijagbo, who according to their belief were the custodians of the Baptist High School, Oyun.
It is important to note that THURIST condemns in the strongest term certain statement of the lady anchor among which is that Muslims should get another school for their wards.
Also, it is noteworthy that this is a serious attempt to derail the already established efforts and further moves by the Muslim Community of Kwara State to keep hope of parents who had enrolled their wards in Baptist High School, Oyun, a journey of no return.
Equally commendable is that Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Government of Kwara state had separated grains from shaft by stating flatly and point blank on a TVC live telecast that the issue of status-co raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter is nothing but the strict adherence to the provision of Section 38 of the constitution which he described as declarative in nature.
Let it be known and identified that THURIST will not condone such publicity.
As we urge all reporters and TV anchors to get facts and findings before talking on Social Media, we equally urge the public to disregard such publicity as it does not represent the true colour of what happened at the said school”, he concluded.
