Miss Ahmed Toyiba Arinola of Osun State College of Education Ila Orangun has reportedly been harassed by one lecture, Mr Adeyiwolu Adekunle of the Department of English Language.
The lecturer, according to a release signed by Barrister Sulaymon A. Tadese, the Director General of THURIST in Nigeria, harassed and later tore Toyiba’s hijab for wearing it to examination centre.
The release reads:
HARASSMENT AND ROUGH-HANDLING OF MUSLIM SISTER IN HIJAB BY MR. ADEYIWOLU ADEKUNLE OF OSUN STATE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION ILA ORANGUN
The Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative had received a report of harassment of Miss. Ahmed Toyiba Arinola of Osun State College of Education Ila Orangun.
We had been informed equally from investigation and fact-finding that the incident involved a lecturer in the College identified as Mr. Adeyiwolu Adekunle of the Department of English Language who had battered her and made attempt to pull off her Hijab.
We want the Management of Osun State College of Education Ila to note that Mr Adeiwolu had committed a grievous offense punishable under the Nigerian Law.
We have reports that Mr. Adeyiwolu Adekunle in the process and in furtherance of the harassment tore Miss Ahmed Toyiba’s Hijab which she wore to her Examination center that very day.
The Constitution had laid emphasis on the rights of every Nigerian to their respective personal liberty contained in section 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and it will be absurd, fallacious and fictitious for such occurrence to happen before the nostrils of a Government-owned Institution.
THURIST as an embodiment of Justice and for justice to be served demands that Mr. Adeyiwolu should make a public apology on the harassment of Miss. Toyiba and that the management of Osun State College of Education, Ila should make such apology known and circulated within and among the students.
This is necessary to restore peace and order and arrest any breakdown of law and order especially from Muslim Students of the University who might resort in jungle justice to avenge the ugly scene.
Take notice that failure to comply with our demands within 7 working days will make it paramount to proceed on further necessary action against you.
