Nigeria’s National Population Commission (NPC) has formally welcomed its new Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf (Talban Wushishi), who assumed office today after being sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.
Dr. Yusuf, born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, brings more than four decades of experience in public service, education, governance, and community development. His appointment is expected to mark a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s demographic data system—an area crucial to national planning and socio-economic development.
A seasoned administrator and academic, Dr. Yusuf began his educational journey at LEA Primary School in Zungeru and attended the Federal Government College, Odogbolu, in Ogun State. He obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education, Minna, in 1983 before earning a B.Sc. (Ed) in Biology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1988.
His advanced academic credentials include a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration, a Master’s Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from ABU in 2010, and a Ph.D. in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Dr. Yusuf has also benefited from international exposure through specialized training, including a High-Impact Presentation Programme in Washington, D.C. (2010) and an Executive Development Programme with Government & Management Services International, London (2013). He also participated in Nigeria’s grassroots Internal Security Summit in 2012.
His career in public service spans several leadership positions. He previously served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, and Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from 2005 to 2007.
Between 2019 and 2023, Dr. Yusuf worked as Special Adviser (Political Affairs) to the Governor of Niger State. He played a key role in national politics as Assistant Director of Grassroots Mobilization for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in 2022, helping to strengthen community outreach structures across North Central Nigeria.
Prior to his current appointment, he served as National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, where he championed institutional development initiatives. He also co-chaired the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee, where he advanced youth and women empowerment programmes designed to build self-reliance and economic resilience.
With his rich background in governance, human capital development, and public administration, Dr Yusuf is expected to provide strategic leadership to the National Population Commission at a time when accurate demographic data is vital for Nigeria’s development goals.
