Nigeria’s Tinubu says economy has turned the corner, joins Olubadan coronation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared on Friday that Nigeria’s economy “has turned the corner” and assured citizens that they would soon reap the benefits of his administration’s economic reforms.

Speaking at the coronation of Oba (Sen.) Abdul-Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in Oyo State, Tinubu expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their patience and support during what he described as a challenging reform process.

“Today, I am honoured to bring the cheering news that our economy has turned around and there is now light at the end of the tunnel,” the president said, adding that the progress achieved was made possible by the “endurance and sacrifices” of Nigerians.

Tinubu praised the new Olubadan—his longtime political ally—for his resilience during his time as governor of Oyo State, where he survived an impeachment attempt. “I pray that you will live long and be celebrated as one of the rare leaders in history to ascend the throne of your forefathers,” Tinubu said.

Governor Seyi Makinde, who officially presented Oba Ladoja with the staff of office, described the coronation as a unifying moment that put an end to disputes over succession in the Ibadan traditional institution. “There is no more rancour about kingship in Ibadanland,” Makinde affirmed.

In his remarks, Oba Ladoja said his ascension symbolized destiny and perseverance, acknowledging both the responsibilities of the throne and the support of his people. “It is not by power, influence, connection, or money that we are here today,” he said.

The event drew prominent dignitaries, including state governors Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Ademola Adeleke (Osun), alongside former governors Donald Duke, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Ibikunle Amosun, and Gbenga Daniel.

Also in attendance were traditional leaders such as the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III; the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade; and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye.

President Tinubu was accompanied by top officials, including Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu and Federal Inland Revenue Service Chairman Zacch Adedeji.
