An Islamic scholar, Dr AbdulWasiu Jumah, has highlighted the evils of music at the Trilingual Media Network 15th media annual lecture on Saturday 4th March, 2023 at Ansarud-deen Central mosque, Oke Eletu, Oyo.
The HOD, Islamic Studies Department, FCE, Oyo noted that gambling, lesbianism, gayism, bisexualism, transgender are gradually being promoted through videos, sports and entertainment as it’s being called today. These are some of the evils of music.
“Some music describe the details of females and sex. A growing lady who is a lover of music will see herself as a tool of sexual gratification by men! Fornication, dating/courtship are not sinful in the eyes of the music lover. Music makes what Allaah forbids seem good to the ear.
“However, some scholars say Muslims can listen to songs that do not have sounds of drums and do not support bad habits and sins. Music that promotes criticism, abusing, crime, bad manners, etc is not allowed for Muslims to be listening to.”
Dr Jumah established that scholars agree on the permissibility of singing without instrumental accompaniment and where the content is not prohibited. This sort of singing is allowed only in certain occasions such as weddings, feasts, welcoming a traveler, and the like, adding that a woman can sing only in front of women and her non-marriageable male kin.
Speaking with our reporter, the convener, Mr Salahudeen Ahmed Oladeji, auditor, Oyo state FIBAN said the choice of this year’s theme, The Role of Broadcasting in Islamic Proselytisation in Nigeria is apt, and that the lecture topic, Music and Musical Instrument; Islamic Perspective is equally insightful in that it provided Islamic instruction on the permissibility and otherwise of music.
Mr Abdurrafii Awujoola, Secretary, Ansarud-deen Society of Nigeria, Oyo lauded Trilingual Media Network for organising the programme which afforded Muslims the opportunity to be enlightened. He berated the extent at which the cancer of music has eaten deep into the society.
The naibatu Amirah, ADYAN, Abdulrafiu Lateefah who is also a mother decried the effect of music on the family front, condemned what operates in the women folk, stating that music is highly intoxicating and destroys moral.
“Music is a rider to indecent dressing which adversely affects the family… A good wife or mother must strive hard to educate and advise their children on the dangers inherent in music, for it erodes chastity”.
Trilingual Media Network played host to members of ADS, Oyo Branch, ADSWC, Oyo Branch, ADYAN, Oyo State Council, FOMWAN, Oyo Zone, Imaam Mobolaji Mikail, Alhaji Prince Jelili Adegbite, Mr Adeyinka Olohunlambe, the HOS, SQ&A, Oyo West, Alhaji Imam Musliudeen Animashahun, Chief Imam, Elegbo Community, Oyo and so on.
