By Nusaybah Shuaib-Osunleke, Ile-Ife

The Master Bakers Association of Nigeria has decided to increase the price of loaves of bread following the hike in the price of the ingredients used in making bread, bachelors’ favourite.

The secretary to the association in Osun state, Mr. Adeeyo Murtala Azeez made this known through a release made available to NewsLiveNigeria on Sunday.

The statement revealed that the increase in the price will not only be effective in Osun environs alone but also in all southwest states of Nigeria which will take effect from the 14th of September 2020.

“The increase in price of the bread was unconnected to the fuel price hike, we made our decision before the fuel price increase”, he said.

Mr. Adeeyo, who further expressed that the increment in bread price was as a result of geometric increase in the prices of the ingredients being used in making one of the most consumed edibles in the country .

“The initial price of flour before COVID-19 was #10,600, and also the price of sugar before COVID-19 was #14,000 but has now risen to #22,000 not forgetting the Nylon being used, things have really been tough”.

“As a result of this, we had to increase the price of bread which made us release the new price of bread which will be efficacious as from Monday, 14th of September”.

“We want the government to know how hard things are on the citizens, increasing the price was not something we wanted to do but something we had to do due to increase in the price of our working tools. We also need to feed despite the arduous situation on ground”.

Mr Adeeyo, however, appealed to government at all levels to look into this issue and help hustling Nigerians to put a stop to the overbearing increase in the price of essential goods and services in the country with the view that the new price of bread will have adverse effects on both the bakers and the general populace.
