Football melancholia: Nigerian teams crash out of continental competitions

The Nigerian football atmosphere has been clouded with dismay after two clubs of the four representatives at the CAF club competitions crashed out in the preliminary rounds.

Plateau United, one of Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League crumbled and fell into the pit after battling to a 0-0 draw against Simba SC of Tanzania in their preliminary round second leg tie at the Mkapa Stadium on Saturday,
News Live Nigeria understands that Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side lost 1-0 in the first leg last weekend at the New Jos International Stadium exiting the NPFL powerhouse from the competition with a 1–0 aggregate loss.

As the game of football would have it, the CAF Confederation Cup was too hostile for Kano Pillars too to remain having been decimated in the preliminary round following a 0-0 draw against Senegalese club ASC Jaraaf at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

The Sai Masu Gida on aggregate lost 3_nill, they were humiliated with three goals while they managed a single goal in two legs.

Nigerian football fans will hope Sunday turns super when Enyimba, the only team tipped to make it to the next round, battle Burkinabe side Rahimo in a CAF Champions League game at the Enyimba International Stadium after deservedly winning the first leg 1-0 away from home.

At the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, all eyes would be on Rivers United as they look to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit when they take on Futuro Kings of Equatorial Guinea in a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary second leg tie.
