Hijab controversy: Kwara teachers obey government’s directive

There was drama Friday at some of the grant-aided schools enmeshed in hijab controversy as principals, teachers and other staff obeyed government’s order by returning to work, The Nation reports.

The state government and authorities of 10 grant-aided mission schools had been at daggers-drawn in the last three weeks over hijab-wearing by female pupils.

The crisis reached its head on Wednesday as Christians and muslims hauled stones and missiles at each other thus preventing the reopening of the schools shut about a month ago.

The state Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) had on Thursday directed all principals, teachers and staff to resume Friday or face sanctions.

In spite of government’s directive authorities of St Anthony College and Cherubim and Seraphim College put the gates of the schools under lock and key.

But the state government decided to break the gates of the two schools in the full glare of Security agents.
