A civil society organisation, Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative has described an attack by masqueraders on a popular Iwo based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Muslihudeen Abdul Baqi Muhammad as an attempt to awake violence in peaceful Iwoland
Sheikh AbdulBaaqi and his congregation were attacked during a sermon at Ajigbaagun compound, Iwo at the early hours of Sunday 21st August, 2022.
A release signed by the body’s Director General, Barrister Sulaimon A. Tadese titled MASQUERADERS ATTACKS ON MUSLIMS; AN ATTEMPT TO AWAKE RELIGIOUS VIOLENCE BEING LAID TO REST FOR LONG IN IWOLAND, reads:
“The Ta’awunu Human Rights Initiative had been informed of a disgusting act engaged by some set of Masqueraders in Iwo against the popular Islamic Cleric Sheikh Muslihudeen Abdul Baqi Muhammad also known as ‘SALAFY’ and his congregation during a sermon at Ajigbaagun compound Iwo at the early hours of Sunday 21st August, 2022.
We have gathered information that some set of Masqueraders which included Kengelo, Sokoti and Lanyi had attacked one Asafa Taofeek, an attendant of the public sermon by this Popular Islamic Cleric at the point of his usual place of public lecture.
It should be noted however, that this set of Masqueraders are making a delicate move to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of Iwoland which it had always been known for, as this is capable of taking the town back to a scratch.
We equally wish to demand and call on the Commissioner for Police Osun State to take a drastic move by effecting the arrest of everyone involved in this delicate act as a yardstick towards restoring normalcy in Iwoland.
We equally wish to make it imperative on the Osun State Commissioner for Police to address this very burning issue as it is capable of undermining the the Security of the State which he had been assigned to protect”, it concluded.
