Nasarawa: Seven-member syndicate arrested in Lafia as police investigate fake currencies

The Nasarawa State Police Command says it has apprehended a seven-member syndicate in whose custody they found N7.8million and 110,000 dollars counterfeit currencies in Nasarawa capital City.

Nasarawa state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bola Longe on Friday at the Police Command Headquarters in Lafia, paraded the syndicate alongside 61 others for various criminal offences.

Longe said that two out of the suspects were apprehended on June 4, when they attempted to make a deposition into an account using Point of Sale (PoS) located around the College of Agriculture in Lafia.

According to Mr Bola Longe, one student of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and one other, went to pay a sum of N50,000 at the POS when the agent discovered some of the notes to be fake.

Longe further explained that the suspect had an argument with the point of sale agent in regards to the fake currencies he was tendering, which caused them to raise voices on eachother drawing the attention of the police towards them for intervention.

“Upon receipt of the Information, police personnel attached to Area Command, Lafia moved immediately to the scene and got the suspect arrested,” he stated.

The Commissioner of police said further investigation on the currencies which led to the arrest of five other suspects and N7.8 million counterfeit currency in 1,000 denomination, and 110,000 dollars counterfeit notes in 100 dollars bills were recovered as exhibits.
