Oyo state strengthens youth empowerment and crime prevention ties

By Bukola Hameed

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to youth development and welfare as a strategic tool for social stability. During a visit from the Nigeria Correctional Service, Agodi Custodial Centre, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, emphasized that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration is focused on creating lawful, gainful opportunities to steer young people away from crime.

She highlighted that the state continues to prioritize the employment of qualified youths and remains committed to growth in key sectors like agriculture, tourism, and artisanship.

Supporting this vision, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Sunday Moradeyo, pointed to the modernization of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex and a partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) as practical examples of how the state is equipping youths with world-class skills. By providing professional coaching and training in modern farming, the government aims to foster economic self-reliance.

Seeking a collaborative approach to social reform, Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Sunday Adekunbi commended the state’s progress but urged for even stronger preventive measures.

He noted that while the Correctional Service focuses on rehabilitating young inmates, sustainable empowerment programs are essential to reduce the number of youth entering the justice system, ensuring a brighter and more productive future for all Oyo State indigenes.
