Rainstorm destroys installations, houses in Igboho 

Rainstorm has destroyed electrical installations, businesses and houses in Igboho community in Oorelope Local Council of Oyo State.

The community suffered significant losses following heavy rainfall with scores of electric poles and close to 500 houses affected by the storm.

Roofs, fences of houses and shops were destroyed.

The Alepata of Igboholand and paramount ruler of Igboho, Oba Dr Joel Olalere Olawuwo, made this known yesterday.

According to Oba Olawuwo, who is the Chairman of Oorelope Local Government Traditional Council, the rainstorm left sorrow and tears in its wake.

He said: “The rainfall left a trail of destruction, tears and sorrow, as it destroyed electrical installations such as transformers and poles and close to 500 houses.

“We know Governor Seyi Makinde as a leader with a heart of compassion and we are using this occasion to plead with him to help our town and our people.”

Meanwhile, the monarch has called on the state government to come to the aid of the community.

The Alepata of Igboholand and the umbrella body for all Igboho sons and daughters, the Ifelodun Omo Igboho, in separate statements made available to journalists, lamented that the rainstorm wreaked unprecedented havoc on the community, affecting major electrical installations and hundreds of families.

He urged Makinde to bring his renowned compassion to bear in helping the community and the victims of the incident.

Similarly, the President of Ifelodun Omo Igboho, Hammed Adegoke, said the rainstorm affected many families who would need urgent assistance from the government.

He pleaded with the governor to direct the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate relief to the community and the victims, as well as “come to the aid of the victims in a more substantial way.”

He added: “On behalf of the entire people of Igboholand, we are notifying the governor about the losses and destruction suffered in Igboho community as a result of the rainfall.”
