2023: Defections ugly, says Seriake Dickson

By Ridwan AREMU

The Senator Representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District and the Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake has described defections in Nigerian Politics as an ugly Nigerian Political Culture.

Dickson made this known in an interview on Wednesday. The former governor stated that defection doesn’t determine the direction that voters will go, while maintaining that Nigeria is yet to witness the peak of defection ahead of 2023 general elections.

“We are not yet at the peak of decamping season, if I may say so. That’s why I was talking about what has happened in the past, when PDP was in power, you know how many opposition governors decamped. At a point PDP controlled above 30 governors. So this idea of decamping is a Nigerian culture, very ugly Nigerian Political Culture which unfortunately has come to say”.

Senator Dickson continued, “It doesn’t really tells you the feeling of the people on ground and elections are about the votes of the people and the Nigerian people are dissatisfied with alot of things that are going on. The direction that votes will go is not determined by the few decamping that you have seen”.

He, however stated that Nigeria will witness more defections of Politicians from one party to another, next year ahead of 2023 elections.

“The decamping season which is next year, you’ll be shocked how many people will move either this year”, he said.

The 2023 general election is about 33 months away and Politicians have started decamping from one party to the other in order to gain more ground ahead of the elections.
