The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has stated that some of its supervisors leaked exam questions before the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) began.
Patrik Areghan, WAEC’s Head of National Office, made this known on Wednesday.
Areghan revealed this during a monitoring exercise to some schools in Yaba, Lagos State.
He did confirm that the culpable supervisors have since been arrested and warned students against indulging in malpractice.
He said, “Students should not go about looking for anything they call expo. It is shameful, supervisors collecting question papers from WAEC and going somewhere to open the questions”.
“Yesterday we caught one in Nasarawa. They don’t know that we have a way of detecting them. In Bauchi, we caught another. We detected it from here. In Port Harcourt, a candidate did the same thing and was arrested,” Areghan explained.

However, some students who spoke with our correspondent but pleaded anonymity affirmed that malpractice in the WASCE exam is not a novel irregularity but its spate might have heightened owing to COVID_19 this year.
” Even my brother told me what the norms were in the WASSCE exams, it didn’t start today but we are happy some of them have been caught “, one of them said.
This year’s examinations began on Monday, August 17, and will end September 7 amid the coronavirus disease of which all examination centres have been advised to comply strictly with the safety guidelines. It has been reported that seven WASSCE students tested positive to coronavirus in Gombe state.
