Constables, DIGON member drown at Awerintu

Two newly employed Constables of the Durbar Police station, Oyo and a member of the Discipline Intelligent Group of Nigeria, DIGON have drowned last night at Awerintu river, Oke Eletu area of Oyo East local government.

The ugly incident occurred at around 7:20 pm on Sunday. Some eye witnesses who spoke with our reporter said the drowned officers were trailing a “guy” suspected to be one of the weed smokers around that place.

Meanwhile, luck ran out of them as the guy magically jumped the stagnant portion of the river, and the officers couldn’t manoeuvre their way and sank.

However, four men from the Fire service, Oyo zone who quickly came to rescue them couldn’t make it. It was the Olori boys that came around 8pm who dived into the dark, muddy water that brought them out.

According to the Nurse in charge at the Accident and Emergency unit of the Oyo state Hospital, General, Oyo, Mr Hamzat Abiola Oladipupo, the three men were brought to the hospital around 9:20pm, dead.

He said, ” the three men; two Constables, in uniform, and one boy scout were brought to the A&E unit of the General hospital around 9:20pm on Sunday. They were certified dead by Doctor Adebiyi who was the doctor on duty. Their remains were later deposited at the hospital’s mortuary”.

Mr Oladipupo also told our reporter that the men of the Nigeria Police across the four local government areas namely; Afijio, Oyo East, Oyo West and Atiba brought the said bodies to the hospital facility.

The Olori boys who did the Samaritan work to rescue the three drowned men were; Aruna Surajudeen, Ibrahim Sulaiman and Ayanfemin Taiwo.

Samson Jolasun, a resident in Oyo East, berated the lackadaisical attitude of the local government to reconstruct dilapidated bridges, covets. He however called on the state government to do the needful in terms of good road networks and rehabilitation of the “home boys”.
