Muslim organisations urged to play expanded role for societal development

All Muslim organisations have been urged to play an expanded and more purposeful role in driving societal development, moving beyond the narrow confines of religious activities and embracing broader social responsibilities.

This renewed call came during Day 4 of the ongoing Turbaning Week Activities organised by the Oyo Alaafin Imamate Inauguration and Turbaning Committee, where the guest lecturer, Ash-Shaykh Sulayman Ajisafe Obalolu, delivered a lecture titled “The roles of Muslim organisations in the development of the society.”

In his presentation, Ash-Shaykh Obalolu emphasised that the true spirit of Islam is reflected not only in acts of worship, but also in how Muslims conduct themselves toward others. He noted that a true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands others are safe, underscoring the importance of integrity, compassion and responsible leadership.

Drawing from early Islamic history, he highlighted the examples of Mu‘adh ibn Jabal, who was entrusted with promoting the welfare of the people, and Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was instructed to fulfil the trusts placed upon him by the people of Makkah. These accounts, he explained, demonstrate the centrality of Amanah — trustworthiness — as a foundational principle for community development.

The lecturer stressed the need for Muslim organisations to take the lead in resolving disputes among community members, fostering unity, strengthening understanding and promoting peace.

According to him, such roles are indispensable in building a stable and harmonious society.

Meanwhile, in his keynote speech, Alhaji Hassan Ademola Arazi emphasised that Muslim bodies must now expand their engagement to include welfare support, health services, orphan care, educational development and organised Zakat management, especially within Oyo, where a coordinated system would greatly enhance social support.

Alhaji Arazi also noted the importance of addressing community concerns such as ensuring the correct alignment of mosque Qiblah whenever necessary.

The Oyo Alaafin Imamate Committee reiterated that these responsibilities should be carried out sincerely for the sake of Allah, noting that meaningful societal progress can only be achieved when capable and trustworthy individuals are placed in the right positions.

Day 4 of the Turbaning Week drew scholars, leaders and concerned citizens who expressed a shared commitment to strengthening the moral and developmental fabric of the community and advancing the welfare of the people of Oyo and its environs.
